For my fifteenth birthday, my mother bought me a simple cine-film camera. I didn’t know much about
photography, but it took my breath away from the very beginning. First, I mostly tried to capture nature,
and only later on, as I started to study in Prague, my first attempts to make photos of people begun. In the
course of time, I produced both smaller and larger documentary cycles, which also contained portraits.
Sometimes I took pictures of people in a temporary studio. I used a simple backdrop and lighting. I was
interested above all in the psychology of my sitters, favoring contents over form.
The cycles, which are part of this book, differ in their topics as well as in the methods I used for producing
the photographs. I nevertheless believe that they form a distinct whole, which bears evidence both of the
sitters and of myself. It would be my pleasure if the viewer felt the same.
